The Montgomery County Council will discuss a bill on Tuesday that would allow 5G towers in residential areas under certain conditions. Zoning change would allow 5G towers in some residential areas
The legislation would amend the county’s zoning code to allow the towers — which transmit high-frequency signals over shorter distances — in residential areas if the base would replace a pre-existing utility pole, streetlight pole, or parking light pole. The 5G towers would be required to be at least 60 feet from the nearest habitable building.
The council will introduce the legislation during a council session that begins at 1 p.m in the third-floor hearing room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville.
Council Member Hans Riemer is the lead sponsor of the bill.
