"Trees are Affected by Electromagnetic Radiation" 2010 Laboratory testing Negative Impact on Plant Health
  • "An initial lab tests of the effects of electromagnetic radiation on the growth of plants, indicates that the radiation might negatively affect the health of plants. The research was carried out by Wageningen University, part of Wageningen UR. Ash trees in the urban environment are increasingly suffering from growth disturbances were found in a growing cell with so-called WiFi access points discoloration and dieback of leaves changing. Although the effects of multiple radiation sources and several trees were found, the researchers found it desirable to repeat the test and preferably for a longer period and on a larger scale. In other reports erroneously reported that TU Delft and TNO in this research involved. Trees in urban areas in recent years show an increasing number of damage such as cracks, bumps, discoloration and various forms of tissue necrosis. In the past, whether these phenomena are caused by biological factors such as pests and diseases. To date, that investigation no clear cause identified. Wageningen University was commissioned by the municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn how the increasing number of sources of electromagnetic radiation, such as masts, could play a role in the deteriorating health of the trees. It was a growing cell the effect of radiation of known WiFi access points on small Esboompjes investigated."

Onion roots were exposed to continuous wave homogenous EMF-r for 1, 2 and 4 h for single day. The results showed that EMF-r exposure enhanced the content of MDA, H2O2 and O2−. Also, there was an upregulation in the activity of antioxidant enzymes− SOD and CAT− in onion roots. The study concluded that 2100 MHz cell phone EMF-r incite oxidative damage in onion roots by altering the oxidative metabolism.”

Gustavino, B., et al. “Exposure to 915 MHz radiation induces micronuclei in Vicia faba root tips.”Mutagenesis31.2 (2016): 187-92.
  • The increasing use of mobile phones and wireless networks raised a great debate about the real carcinogenic potential of radiofrequency-electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure associated with these devices. Conflicting results are reported by the great majority of in vivo and in vitro studies on the capability of RF-EMF exposure to induce DNA damage and mutations in mammalian systems. Aimed at understanding whether less ambiguous responses to RF-EMF exposure might be evidenced in plant systems with respect to mammalian ones, in the present work the mutagenic effect of RF-EMF has been studied through the micronucleus (MN) test in secondary roots of Vicia faba seedlings exposed to mobile phone transmission in controlled conditions, inside a transverse electro magnetic (TEM) cell.
  • Results of three independent experiments show the induction of a significant increase of MN frequency after exposure, ranging from a 2.3-fold increase above the sham value, at the lowest SAR level, up to a 7-fold increase at the highest SAR. These findings are in agreement with the limited number of data on cytogenetic effects detected in other plant systems exposed to mobile phone RF-EMF frequencies and clearly show the capability of radiofrequency exposure to induce DNA damage in this eukaryotic cell system.
  • It is worth noticing that this range of SAR values is well below the international limits for localised exposure (head, trunk), according to the ICNIRP guidelines (35) and IEEE std C95.1 (38), which are 10 (8.0) W/kg for occupational exposure and 2.0 (1.6) W/kg for general public exposure respectively.

Waldmann-Selsam, C., et al. “Radiofrequency radiation injures trees around mobile phone base stations.”Science of the Total Environment572 (2016): 554-69.
  • “In the last two decades, the deployment of phone masts around the world has taken place and, for many years, there has been a discussion in the scientific community about the possible environmental impact from mobile phone base stations. Trees have several advantages over animals as experimental subjects and the aim of this study was to verify whether there is a connection between unusual (generally unilateral) tree damage and radiofrequency exposure.
  • To achieve this, a detailed long-term (2006-2015) field monitoring study was performed in the cities of Bamberg and Hallstadt (Germany).
  • The measurements of all trees revealed significant differences between the damaged side facing a phone mast and the opposite side, as well as differences between the exposed side of damaged trees and all other groups of trees in both sides. Thus, we found that side differences in measured values of power flux density corresponded to side differences in damage. The 30 selected trees in low radiation areas (no visual contact to any phone mast and power flux density under 50μW/m(2)) showed no damage. Statistical analysis demonstrated that electromagnetic radiation from mobile phone masts is harmful for trees. These results are consistent with the fact that damage afflicted on trees by mobile phone towers usually start on one side, extending to the whole tree over time.”

Martin Pall.“Electromagnetic Fields Act Similarly in Plants as in Animals: Probable Activation of Calcium Channels via Their Voltage Sensor”Current Chemical Biology, Volume 10 , Issue 1 , 2016
  • It has been shown that low intensity microwave/lower frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) act in animals via activation of voltage-gated calcium channels (VGCCs) in the plasma membrane, producing excessive intracellular calcium [Ca2+]i, with excessive [Ca2+]i leading to both pathophysiological and also in some cases therapeutic effects. The pathophysiological effects are produced largely through excessive [Ca2+]i signaling including excessive nitric oxide (NO), superoxide, peroxynitrite, free radical formation and consequent oxidative stress. The activation of the VGCCs is thought to be produced via EMF impact on the VGCC voltage sensor, with the physical properties of that voltage sensor predicting that it is extraordinarily sensitive to these EMFs.
  • It is shown here that the action of EMFs in terrestrial, multicellular (embryophyte) plants is probably similar to the action in animals in most but not all respects, with calcium channel activation in the plasma membrane leading to excessive [Ca2+]i, leading in turn to most if not all of the biological effects. A number of studies in plants are briefly reviewed which are consistent with and supportive of such a mechanism. Plant channels most plausibly to be involved, are the so-called two pore channels (TPCs), which have a voltage sensor similar to those found in the animal VGCCs.

  • The aim of this work was to study possible effects of environmental radiation pollution on plants. The association between cellular telephone (short duration, higher amplitude) and base station (long duration, very low amplitude) radiation exposure and the growth rate of soybean (Glycine max) seedlings was investigated.
  • The exposure to higher amplitude (41 V m−1) GSM radiation resulted in diminished outgrowth of the epicotyl. The exposure to lower amplitude (5.7 V m−1) GSM radiation did not influence outgrowth of epicotyl, hypocotyls, or roots. The exposure to higher amplitude CW radiation resulted in reduced outgrowth of the roots whereas lower CW exposure resulted in a reduced outgrowth of the hypocotyl. Soybean seedlings were also exposed for 5 days to an extremely low level of radiation (GSM 900 MHz, 0.56 V m−1) and outgrowth was studied 2 days later. Growth of epicotyl and hypocotyl was found to be reduced, whereas the outgrowth of roots was stimulated.
  • Our findings indicate that the observed effects were significantly dependent on field strength as well as amplitude modulation of the applied field.

  • “Since 2005, on the occasion of medical examinations of sick residents living near mobile phone base stations, changes in nearby trees (crown, leaves, trunk, branches, growth) were observed at the same time as clinical symptoms in humans occurred. Both deciduous and coniferous trees as well as shrub species were affected. The assessment of tree diseases is neither impeded by psychological impacts nor by change of location. Impacts of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) from radar, radio and TV on plant life have been scientifically demonstrated over the past 80 years. Since 2005, the influence of modulated RF-EMF - that are used in mobile phone telephony - has been investigated in lab experiments. Several research groups reported about the impacts on germination, growth and cell metabolism. Only a few scientific papers have been published to date on research concerning the health conditions of trees in the vicinity of mobile phone base stations. These papers are indicating harmful impacts. For this reason, between 2007 and 2013, the status of trees standing in the neighbourhood of 620 mobile phone base stations was documented. In the radio shadow of buildings or that one of other trees, the trees stayed healthy. However, within the radiation field, damages were observed on exposed trees. Additionally, unilateral crown damage, beginning on the side facing the antenna, strongly indicates a causal relationship with RF-EMF. In the following, examples of crown damages and of premature colouring of leaves are presented. The authors believe, that scientific research is urgently needed to examine these observations.”

  • “The purpose of our study was to investigate the alterations in enzyme activities in leaves after exposure of plants Plectranthus sp. to 900 MHz EMF and their dependence on the time elapsed after exposure.
  • Alterations in activity of isocitrate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in leaves were registered immediately after the end of the exposure and 1, 2 and 24 hours later. Irradiation of plants induced different alterations in enzyme activities depending on the time elapsed after irradiation. Immediately after exposure the activity of the three investigated enzymes decreased, but increased at 24th hour.

  • Following ELF-MFs exposure, an increased resistance was detected, particularly after an 8-h treatment, as shown by the decrease in lesion area and number. Moreover, two enzyme activities involved in resistance mechanisms were analyzed: ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL). Uninoculated leaves previously exposed to ELF-MFs in general showed a significant increase relative to controls in ODC and PAL activities, in particular for 13 microT static MF plus 28.9 microT, 10 Hz sinusoidal MF (24 h) treatment.
  • In conclusion, ELF-MFs seem to influence the HR of tobacco to TMV, as shown by the increased resistance and changes in ODC and PAL activities, indicating the reliability of the present plant model in the study of bioelectromagnetic interactions.”

What are Smartmeters?
Smartmeters are the new utility consumption measurement devices for electricity, water, and gas that are being installed across the nation, at residences and other buildings. There would be a separate meter for each type of utility and they are installed by the companies and governments that provide the utilities.

 Some Facts About Smartmeters

Smart Meters emit radio-frequency radiation (RFR).
Most smartmeter are designed to emit radio-frequency radiation (RFR). This is a concern because RFR is a biologically-active electromagnetic exposure that is absorbed into our bodies.  Many smartmeter systems generate RFR to wirelessly communicate with other smartmeters and to the utility provider and each of these wireless communication networks increase the overall density of manmade pulsed RFR radiation outdoors and indoors, throughout a neighborhood.

The radiation generated by smartmeters is the same type as generated by your cell phone- radiofrequency radiation.
Peer reviewed science has found increased cancer, immune system damage, and headaches after exposures to radiofrequency radiation. Dr. David Carpenter’s letter “Correcting the Gross Misinformation” addresses the biological health effects of smartmeters.
Smartmeter radiation penetrates deeper into children's bodies.
Research consistently finds that radiofrequency radiation penetrates deeper into children's bodies and brains and the American Academy of Pediatrics considers children more vulnerable to radiofreuncy radiation- whatever the source. Research that has looked specifically at smartmeters has found that the radiation is absorbed at a faster rate and more intensely into their bodies. Read this 2018 published paper (Qureshi 2018)which concludes that the highest observed whole body specific energy absorption rate value was in the child model when radiation from a smartmeter was simulated.

Bees, birds and insects are exposed to higher density of RFR.
The pulsed RFR emitted by smartmeters and other wireless telecommunications poses risks to pollinators and wildlife. Published research has found negative impacts tobees, plants, andwildlife.  For example, a review of 113 studies from original peer-reviewed publications found RF-EMF had a significant effect on birds, insects, other vertebrates, other organisms and plants in 70% of the studies. Development and reproduction of birds and insects are the most strongly affected endpoints.Read more.

Most smartmeters emit very strong pulses of RFR twenty four hours a day.

Contrary to claims made by utility providers that the exposure is “low,” many smartmeters continuously emit RFR in millisecond blasts. These short bursts of radiation can be very powerful.
Wireless smart meters typically produce very short high levels of pulsed RF/microwaves.  They emit these millisecond-long RF bursts on average 9,600 times a day with a maximum of 190,000 daily transmissions and a peak level emission two and a half times higher than the stated safety signal, as the California utility Pacific Gas & Electric recognized before that State’s Public Utilities Commission.
Please see “Assessment of Radiofrequency Microwave Radiation Emissions from Smart Meters”by Sage Associates. This research uses computer modeling that has found potential violations of current FCC public safety standards for smart meters and/or collector meters in the manner installed and operated in California are predicted in this Report.Download this entire report as a PDF file

Smartmeter systems intentionally create a “mesh” wireless communications network which is RFR emissions.
Many smartmeters work differently than cell phones. Cell phones communicate by continuous two-way exchange of RFR emissions between the phone and a cell tower, whereas, smartmeters can communicate with each other in a wireless “mesh network.” Every meter in the mesh network wirelessly “chats” by RFR emissions connecting it to every other meter within its mesh network (the size of the network can be all meters within one or two miles).

The data wirelessly riding on your meter’s RFR emissions is collected by the utility provider’s centralized hub antennas—these may be mounted on utility poles called Data Collector Unitsor be specially-programmed collector meters or other transceivers spaced throughout a community. Collector meters usually have more powerful emissions because they are communicating with the other meters in the network. Read more about mesh networks.

Smartmeter radiation is neither “low” nor “safe”.
Utility companies claim that the RFR emitted by wireless smartmeters and their networks meet government FCC limits. However, 20-year-old FCC limits (based on 30-year-old science) are not protective of human health and are hundreds of thousands of times too high to protect humans and wildlife from biological effects.

Peer reviewed published studies show the adverse biological effects of pulsed electromagnetic radiation, such as RFR, on the body at emissions levels far below FCC limits. You can find many of these studies at theBioInitiative Report,JustProveIt.net, and Environmental Health Trust.

“When it comes to non-thermal effects of RF, which is the most relevant effect for public concerns, FCC guidelines are irrelevant and can not be used for any claims of SmartMeter safety unless we are addressing heat damage.”—Dr. De Kun Li, a Kaiser research scientist who has published research on electromagnetic radiation and provided expert testimony on health concerns related to smartmeters and the inadequacy of FCC limitshere.

Smartmeters can increase the “dirty” electricity on the electrical and metal plumbing systems throughout your home.
Digital meters operate by a built-in switched mode power supply, which generates what is commonly known as “dirty electricity” and referred to by electricians and electrical engineers as “voltage transients,” “voltage harmonics,” “line noise,” and “power quality issues.” This is a concern because dirty electricity is also a biologically-active, penetrating, electromagnetic physical agent. This dirty electricity then travels throughout your home via the electrical wiring and metal pipes.

People are reporting symptoms after smartmeters are installed at their residences.
Reported symptoms include sleep disturbances, rashes, hyperactivity, changes in children's behavior, high blood pressure, endocrine problems, thyroid problems, facial flushing, nausea, flu-like symptoms, body pain, leg cramps, cardiac symptoms, heart palpitations, heart arrhythmias, dizziness, fatigue, physical weakness, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, learning problems, ringing in the ears, headaches, and more. People report these symptoms immediately or shortly after smartmeters are installed and activated in their communities. Learn more about electrical sensitivity and microwave sickness.

How do I get a smartmeter off my house?
24 States have opt outs for smartmeters.
First, take a glance at your meter and see if you have a smartmeter or an analogue meter. Some people take a photo of the meter from a distance away from the meter so that instead they can look more closely at the photo. If your meter does not look like a digital meter, that is not a guarantee that it is not smart; contact your utility provider and ask (experienced citizens recommend that you do not explain why you are asking, simply ask andask for the model name/number of your meter. If you do not have a smartmeter, find out if smartmeters are coming to your neighborhood by contacting a local smartmeter advocacy group or your utility provider. If you are not sure whether or not your meter is smart, if you have its model name/number, usually a local smartmeter advocacy group can tell you.

If you do have a smartmeter and you are in the United States, you can contact your utility provider and tell them you want your meter replaced with an analogue meter. Also send a letter via postal mail to your utility provider. Sometimes the provider’s representative who answers the phone is not aware of this issue. We recommend locating the smartmeter advocacy group in your state working on this issue for full information on what you can do in your state and how you can best address this issue. To find the local smartmeter advocacy group in your area go to the EMF Safety Network webpage on global smartmeter groups or StopSmartmeters local group directory.

The need for consumer choice.
People should have a right to choose whether or not they want a smartmeter at their home. Yet in many communities residents are told they have no choice and cannot refuse a meter. Or if residents are given an “opt out” they are required to pay monthly fees (in addition to the utility consumption charges) to keep the analogue meter. If you do not have any type of meter at your home (for example, some residents pay a flat fee for water) or have other questions about your options, you can find the local smartmeter advocacy group in your area at the EMF Safety Network webpage on global smartmeter groups or StopSmartmeters local group directory.

People are taking action in the US and worldwide so that citizens have consumer choice in regards to their utility meters, and there are groups formed in every area. Learn more at the resources below this post.

Communities and individuals have been successful in halting the smartmeter rollout in their area and getting analogue meters.

After community awareness was raised, some cities have enacted moratoriums on smartmeters. For example, the Santa Cruz Health Departmentissued a report and the city has a Moratorium on smartmeters.

Some individuals were initially told they must pay to “opt out” but were successful in getting these opt-out fees dropped after litigation. For example, you can read about Josh Hart’s successful legal battlehere.
